Located: 24 miles northwest of Pagosa Springs on U.S. 160; 250 miles southwest of Denver via U.S. 285 to U.S. 160.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad


America’s most authentic steam-operated railroad, the Cumbres & Toltec, is a remnant of the spirit that won the West. Built in 1880, it was part of the San Juan Extension of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Its path through steep passes and deep gorges is the stuff of adventure novels and was an engineering feat for the time.

Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad 


Ride one of the most spectacular vintage narrow-gauge trains in North America up the Animas River Gorge to the mining town of Silverton at an elevation of 9,300 feet. In Silverton we'll tour the mining district, and then return by bus or van over the Million Dollar Highway and on to Pagosa Springs. Each train car has restrooms, and a concession car sells refreshments.

Additionally, Penitente Canyon is about an hour and a half outside of town.
