Fall & Winter Activities

The small town of Pagosa Springs may be quaint. But it’s adventure that beats at the heart of this special Southern Colorado mountain community.  When warm sunny days make way for beautiful changing leaves and dreamy snowfalls, there are even more charms to uncover. From the thrill of skiing and snowboarding to the more relaxed pace of an easy hike, fall and winter are easy to embrace here.

Hot Air Balloon Ride

Soar high above hidden canyons and valleys and experience the beauty of the Rocky Mountains from a whole new perspective, from the sky in a hot air balloon. Be part of the excitement as the beautiful, 120-foot-tall balloon rises from the ground and enjoy the sights and tranquility as you soar high above. A beautiful and unique experience.

Hiking and Biking Trails

At The Springs, we are surrounded by endless miles of scenic trails, perfect for exploring by foot, bicycle, or ATV. Intermediate mountain biking trails, ideal asphalt, and endless gravel roads create excellent opportunities for training at elevation. The San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests provide access to the Continental Divide, ghost towns, and breathtaking views from above 13,000 feet. Experience wildlife viewing and changing foliage in the fall.

Scenic Fall Drives

Pagosa Springs has some of the best scenic drives in Colorado, surrounded by 3 million acres of wilderness and national forest areas.

Wolf Creek Ski Area

Skiing in the Colorado mountains is enjoyed by many, however, being able to ski and snowboard where the most snow falls in the state, far away from crowds and lift lines, is a Colorado experience not to be missed. Pagosa Springs is located 23 miles from Wolf Creek Ski Resort where over 465 inches of snow falls on average each season.

Snowshoe and XC Ski

Pagosa Country’s wintry backcountry is a sparkling sight not to be missed. To those serious about discovering this pristine landscape: strap on a pair of snowshoes or Nordic skis. Thanks to the Pagosa Nordic Club, the 50km of groomed trails are free and dog friendly. Families and beginner freestyle and skate skiers embark on the Reservoir Hill Nordic Trails, while those who are more advanced take to the Coyote Hill Nordic Loops. Snowshoers may share these trails with skiers, as long as they stay clear of the skating lane.

Ice Fishing

Lakes may freeze over when deep frost sets in, but that doesn’t mean the fish stop biting in Pagosa Springs. Several reservoirs in the Pagosa Springs vicinity yield some of the best ice fishing in southwestern Colorado. Find rainbow trout and yellow perch in Echo Reservoir, or wet your line in Williams Creek Reservoir for kokanee salmon and trout of the brook, rainbow and cutbow varieties. Before making your way out onto the ice, be sure to have your fishing license in tow — it is required year-round and can be purchased online.

Skating Ponds

It’s a favorite winter pastime the whole family can enjoy — or a romantic outing the two of you won’t soon forget. The ponds behind River Center are maintained throughout the winter months. As long as the ice is at least four inches thick, pond skating is free game — with special emphasis on the “free” part, as there’s no charge to skate atop the ponds.

Sledding and Tubing

A sled, tube or toboggan can mean hours of endless fun for adults and kids alike. Rent a sled and make a break for the nearest hill in Pagosa Springs. Free local favorites include Reservoir Hill in downtown Pagosa and the parking area near Lobo Overlook on Wolf Creek or Coyote Hill on Piedra Road.

Your 30-minute venture includes a meet-and-greet with the horses and driver, a warm beverage, photo opportunities, and an unforgettable scenic ride along the San Juan River, iconic hot springs, and majestic San Juan mountains.

Spring & Summer Activities

When the weather is warmer your days are well-spent rafting, kayaking, or exploring ghost towns and gold mines on a 4×4 trail ride. Climb rocky grades, wind down narrow forest trails, and climb up the mountainsides on an ATV. Or discover why Pagosa Springs is so great for rock climbing. Followed by a soothing soak, of course.
