The Detox Journey

A woman in a green swimsuit relaxes in a steaming outdoor pool, arms outstretched, near large rocks and stone walls, with distant buildings and trees in the mist.

According to Dr. Coplin, “a ‘toxin’ is an excess of environmental and metabolic wastes that have accumulated in the body. Our body has many efficient systems for keeping this excess from damaging our health, and if we can periodically target and support those systems we can ensure the scales of health are balanced in our favor.”

“Hydrothermal therapies, such as Balneotherapy, physically and metabolically enhances ‘toxin’ elimination by engaging with multiple systems in the body at the same time. The heat from the water, the pressure of the water on the skin, and the minerals in the water all provide for very specific detoxifying effects by increasing your body’s own ability to do what it naturally wants to do. Sweating, circulation, filtration, and elimination are key ways that ‘toxins’ are moved from the cellular level, out of the tissue space and finally eliminated.”

The Six Systems

1. LYMPH NODES
and Lymphatic System

A key player of the immune system, helps rid body of ‘toxins’ and waste.

2. LUNGS
and Respiratory System

Helps body obtain and transport oxygen to your blood and remove waste gas.

3. KIDNEYS
and Urinary System

Filters and removes waste from blood. Helps body regulate blood pressure.

4. STOMACH, INTESTINES
and GI System

Helps body break down and absorb nutrients, and remove waste products.

5. SKIN, SWEAT GLANDS
and Integumentary System

Protects body against external factors like infection and injury. Expels waste.

6. BRAIN
and Limbic System

Balances neurotransmitters. Regulates emotional and behavioral responses.

Preparing an Intentional Journey to Well-being

Using Contrast Bathing

Contrast bathing combines hot and cold water bathing to stimulate the body’s systems and functions. This therapy, known as “hydrotherapy,” can be beneficial for promoting detoxification, helping the body to remove toxins and waste products.

Key Benefits of Contrast Bathing:

  • Enhances your body’s natural detoxification process.
  • Increases your mental resiliency & fortitude.
  • Stimulates your circulation.
  • Tonifies and vitalizes your skin.

For more information on Contrast Bathing and the therapeutic benefits of using Contrast Bathing, see our Science-based Soaking Guide or visit our Water-based Wellness resource page.

Meals & Nutrition

For optimal results from your Detoxification Journey, intentional nutrition is key. Drink plenty of fluids, eat foods that help promote detoxification and limit toxins, and avoid any substances that may hinder your progress. This approach to nutrition honors your soaking sessions and wellness activities and helps you to make choices that will support your long-term health and well-being.

When you are on The Detoxification Journey, it is important to eat whole, unprocessed foods that are easy to digest. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. In addition, focus on low-calorie, light protein options. There are also certain foods and herbs that are particularly supportive of detoxification. These include turmeric, ginger, cayenne, and fennel. Including these foods in your diet will help to optimize the detoxification process.

Recommended Resort Options:
Hummus, Edamame Quinoa Salad | Available at the Barefoot Grill

Hydration

Hydration is an important part of detoxification, as it helps your body to flush out toxins. During a hot spring detox, you should drink plenty of water. Keep a water bottle with you throughout your detox journey, and make sure you sip water throughout the day.

Vitality Tonics

In addition to drinking plenty of water, take advantage of our nutrient-rich vitality tonics available at the Cafe, Canteen, and Phoenix Bar. These wellness-enhancing blends are designed to help you feel your best during the Detoxification Journey while providing important vitamins and minerals.

Recommended Resort Options:
Headwater Rescue, Ever-Greens, Get-Up and ‘Gosa | Available at the Canteen

Rest

Rest is encouraged. Listen and embrace the times when your body wants to unwind and allow it to rest. Your body will continue to process the benefits from your intense contrast bathing cycles as you rest. We’ve highlighted intentional resting periods throughout the journey and you are encouraged to take additional rest as needed, reduce or skip contrast circuits, or utilize wellness activities based on your body’s needs – More is not always better!
